Healthy Relationships

What makes a relationship healthy, how to spot one that isn't, and ten concrete skills for improving the relationships you have.

What the module covers

The module is built on eight components of a healthy relationship: mutual respect, trust, honesty, support, fairness and equality, separate identities, good communication, and playfulness. Each one gets unpacked in plain terms, alongside a needed reality check: no relationship is perfect, relationships take work, and complicated ones (with family, with coworkers) are common.

Participants then learn to recognize trouble: 11 signs of an unhappy relationship, from feeling pressure to change who you are to a lack of privacy or fairness, plus practical strategies for dealing with toxic people, like setting boundaries, staying calm, and picking your battles. The heart of the module is 10 skills for improving any relationship, including owning your statements with "I feel" language, receiving feedback, listening without interrupting, and expressing appreciation regularly.

Correctional   Community

How it's delivered.

Sessions combine teaching with practice: a role-play activity contrasting healthy and unhealthy communication; a reflection exercise in which participants identify two significant relationships and how each could improve; and a journal commitment to name one thing they'll do this month to improve one of them. Every session closes by connecting participants to local and national support resources.
