Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
Adverse childhood experiences shape adult health through toxic stress. This module names that honestly, then spends equal time on what heals: coping, resilience, and the positive experiences that counterbalance the negative.

What the module covers.
The module defines ACEs (adverse childhood experiences) like abuse, neglect, caregiver mental illness, and violence, and explains their connection to toxic stress: an excessive, long-lasting stress response with a wear-and-tear effect on the body, like revving a car engine for days at a time. Participants complete the ACEs questionnaire, always at their own pace; the material can bring up strong feelings, and the module says so directly.
The second half is deliberately hopeful. Participants explore coping strategies (from therapy and mindfulness to journaling and time in nature), what resilience is and 12 ways to build it, and BCEs (benevolent childhood experiences). Emerging research suggests BCEs may partly explain why some people with high ACEs still achieve favorable mental health outcomes. Healing is possible; your story isn't over.

Adapted for context
| Correctional | Community |
The correctional version includes additional pacing and safety considerations for delivering trauma content in confined settings.
How it's delivered.
The session is paced for heavy material: an ACEs primer video, both the ACEs and BCEs questionnaires, a healing-from-ACEs video, journal prompts (one experience that affected you as a child, how you coped, one way you care for yourself now), a resilience commitment for the month ahead, and a guided grounding exercise. Participation is always at each person's own pace, and the session closes with local and national support resources, including SAMHSA, 988, and NAMI.
